dolitl is veterinary practice management software that is built with web technologies. It is not a "web-enabled" application – it is a website. However, it runs like an Intranet (a private version of the Internet), a website that comes from a central server available only to the company where it resides. It also allows restricted outside access so that it can be used in the field by employees.
In the past, from a veterinary surgeon's point of view, web technologies have not been the first choice and people have favoured a desktop tool. From a wider perspective, software on the web and people’s perception of it has developed considerably in recent times, being helped by government initiatives like the British Cattle Movement Service, online banking, auction and social networking sites and forums. From a software developer's perspective, it is now a reality that we can have a centrally installed and maintained application that can reliably exchange data with other linked installations, and also provide a highly interactive and graphic user experience.
The name comes from a contemporary take on Dr John Dolittle, the familiar character created by Hugh Lofting. It also encapsulates the most important principle of our system – saving you time by making you do less.
